The Charles Mopeli Stadium, located in Phuthaditjhaba, Free State, South Africa, is a 35,000-capacity sports venue with a storied past deeply tied to the football history of the QwaQwa region. Originally built and opened in 1977, the stadium transitioned from a bustling hub of Premier Soccer League (PSL) action to a largely neglected and derelict facility in recent years.
Origins and Golden Era
The venue was originally known as the QwaQwa Stadium (and sometimes referred to as the Mampoi sports ground). It was later renamed in honour of Dr Kenneth Mopeli (Dr T.K. Charles Mopeli), the former Chief Minister of the QwaQwa bantustan, under whose administration the stadium, local hospitals, and university campuses were built. Locally, passionate football fans affectionately nicknamed the stadium "Ka Skoting"
